Welcome to Sumr. This Privacy Policy explains how our app handles user information. By using Sumr, you agree to the terms of this policy.

Information We Collect

Personal Information

Sumr does not collect any personal information such as names, email addresses, or other identifying information.

Anonymous Usage Data

We collect minimal anonymous usage data to improve our service:

  • Anonymous User Identifier: A random UUID generated on your device and stored securely in your iOS Keychain. This identifier is completely anonymous and cannot be linked to you personally.
  • Usage Metrics: We track only:
    • The fact that a summarization or follow-up request was made (as a simple count)
    • The length of the content being summarized (character/token count only)
    • The date and time of the request
  • No Content Storage: We do NOT store URLs, webpage content, summaries, or follow-up questions - even for proxy mode requests.

API Keys

If you choose to use your own API key, it is stored locally on your device and never transmitted to our servers.

How We Use Your Information

We use the minimal anonymous data collected solely to:

  • Track usage quotas for users who subscribe to our service
  • Understand general usage patterns to improve the app
  • Ensure fair usage of our proxy service

For users with their own API keys, requests are sent directly to the AI provider (e.g., OpenAI) without passing through our servers.

Third-Party Services

Firebase Services

We use Firebase for:

  • Cloud Functions: To provide proxy service for users without API keys
  • Firestore Database: To store anonymous usage counters tied to your UUID
  • Remote Configuration: To update app settings without requiring app updates

We do NOT use Firebase Analytics or Google Analytics.

AI Providers

When using the app, your content is sent to AI providers (OpenAI, or others you select) for summarization. Please refer to their respective privacy policies for how they handle data.

Data Retention

Anonymous usage data (request counts, content length, timestamps) is retained as long as you use the service. Since this data is tied only to an anonymous UUID, there is no way to identify specific users.

Information Sharing

We do not share any data with third parties. The minimal anonymous usage data we collect stays within our Firebase infrastructure and is never sold, shared, or used for any purpose other than providing and improving the Sumr service.

Cookies and Tracking Technologies

Sumr does not use cookies or any tracking technologies. The Safari extension stores summaries locally in your browser’s localStorage for your convenience, but this data never leaves your device.

User Controls

  • API Keys: You can add or remove your API key at any time through the app settings
  • Local Data: You can clear locally stored summaries through the extension interface
  • Anonymous Identifier: The UUID persists across app reinstalls but creating a new one would result in loss of any subscription status

Data Security

  • API Keys: Stored securely in iOS Keychain (for future versions) or UserDefaults
  • Anonymous Identifier: Stored securely in iOS Keychain
  • Network Communication: All communication uses HTTPS encryption
  • No Personal Data: Since we don’t collect personal information, there’s no risk of personal data exposure

Children’s Privacy

Sumr does not target any specific age group. The app can be safely used by individuals of all ages as it does not collect personal information and only processes content selected by the user.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify users of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page. Users are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
